Centered Home

Two architects, who run individual studios based on opposite coasts of the United States, joined forces in designing Centered Home in Los Angeles, California. In a collaborative process, aanda architetcs and HYCArch transformed an existing Spanish-style house into a home that facilitates a life transition to semi-retirement for the owners. The architecture and interior design reflect the owners’ desire to approach their new future expansively, intentionally and with curiosity.

Join us on a tour of the building’s bright interior, where zen and meditation are cornerstones of a pervasive atmosphere of well-being.

Thickness: 22 mm. Width: 300 mm. Full lengths 4.2 m.

Finish: Lye and White Oil

As the name suggests, Centered Home aims to provide a feeling of calm, self-awareness and harmony for the owners. Together, aanda architects and HYCArch have created a safe, peaceful setting, where the different sections of the home are organized concentrically, each serving its given purpose and all interconnected in a natural flow.

The interior is composed of specially designed textures and subtle, playful details that contribute to soft, tactile, well-lit living areas. All the primary rooms of the house have floors in Dinesen Ash as a basic element that provides a link to nature. The Classic variant and the Lye and White Oil finish heighten the bright, pleasant expression of the home and bring the design concept together.

‘We worked meticulously in collaboration with Dinesen to create a floor with a very specific layout. The floor planks in Dinesen Ash are arranged in an ultra-precise composition, so that every seam is aligned in a staggered way for a harmonious expression.’

– Annie Barrett, founding principal of aanda architects

The neutral interior palette allows the owners’ art and furnishings to bring warm, vibrant touches to the home. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the interior spaces with light and frame the exterior landscape. As a unique detail, the architects designed sculptural skylights that give rise to a geometric play of light in the beautiful home.
