A distinctive residential building rises above Brooklyn, New York. Designed by the local studio SO-IL and developed by the real estate firm Tankhouse, this project takes inspiration from the contrasting urban experiences of its corner location—townhouses on one side and vibrant street activity on the other. The building's facade features precast concrete panels of varied shapes, sizes, and finishes, giving it a distinctive and robust appearance in New York's multifamily housing landscape. A green inner sanctuary provides a peaceful retreat to every apartment, contrasting with the lively street life.
Craft and Character in an Immersive Experience
Danish award-winning architect David Thulstrup has curated the apartment as an intimate, fully furnished residence. Dinesen wood envelopes two floors in a setting imitating everyday life in New York, where light shifts across wooden surfaces, footsteps meet the grain, and each space invites touch and engagement.
Thulstrup's approach was rooted in the context and surroundings. His respect for architecture meant implementing the right materials to achieve and enhance one's sense of place. The Dinesen Apartment by David Thultrup aimed to create something that integrates with the architecture while fully sensing Dinesen's materials. Thulstrup succeeded in enhancing what was already there through materiality and furniture.
At the heart of the apartment lies Layers Oak Classic, chosen for its calm elegance and engineered stability. In select places, Layers HeartOak introduces a bolder character, its natural cracks held by Oak butterfly joints.
The Danish carpentry duo Ocular created the expertly crafted joinery details, ensuring a seamless flow of wood throughout the floors, walls, built-in furniture, and a custom half-turn staircase. The walls are adorned with Layers Oak that matches the width of the flooring, extending across the doors to create a harmonious transition that beautifully blends function and design. The stair treads are framed with mitered corners, and their depths are precisely aligned with the width of the wall-cladding, establishing a uniform visual language throughout the space. The half-turn staircase and wooden walls envelop you in a comforting cocoon of warmth. The finishing touches showcase a wide, solid HeartOak headboard and an impressive floor-to-ceiling bookcase in Classic Oak, blending with the room's flow and charm.
