London-based Studio Tashima performed an extensive renovation and transformation of the Hampstead Heath House project in North London. The five-storey Victorian terrace house is designed for a family relocating from South Africa. The primary vision was to translate the expansive, light-filled environments the clients were used to into the more vertical, narrow London context. By integrating spatial reconfiguration with sensitive material choices, Studio Tashima created a new sense of openness and fluidity within the historic structure.

Central to this transformation is a sculptural staircase combining a steel profile with Dinesen Oak wood, forming a continuous, curving element that connects all five floors and draws natural light down into the heart of the home through a skylight at the attic level.

While the house was completely stripped back, the project respects the original proportions and exterior character, blending contemporary elements with Victorian sensibilities. Key to the spatial experience is the interplay between flow and function: open yet well-defined zones for living, working, and entertaining. Natural, simple, and characterful materials throughout the house establish a calm, tactile foundation. The Oak Natural floors serve this exact intent: a soothing foundation for the crisp light-coloured walls and a harmonious nod to the above millwork in the downstairs dining room.

The palette is selected for its aesthetic and durable qualities and as a subtle backdrop to the family’s South African art collection. Sustainable strategies such as thermal upgrades, natural insulation, and an air-source heat pump system further future-proof the home.

The result is a warm, refined home that merges global influences with the architectural heritage of London.
