Hotel 1904

On Norway’s west coast lies the town of Ålesund. It occupies a number of islands on the very edge of the sea and is virtually encircled by water throughout in the form of the mighty Atlantic Ocean on its doorstep or the arms of the fjord winding their way through town. When Ålesund was destroyed by fire in 1904 it was rebuilt in the architectural style of the time, art nouveau. Among the buildings in this reconstruction is the oldest hotel in town: Hotel 1904, which has been welcoming guests from near and far for more than 100 years.

This charming hotel in the heart of the art nouveau town is itself an example of the characteristic architectural style. In a recent refurbishment, the interior was completely remodelled, and the facade was renovated.

At Hotel 1904, the focus is on restoring the building’s historical identity while embracing the present with a contemporary interior. The 80 guest rooms combine an elegant expression with warm textiles and soft furniture, including the iconic Danish designer Hans J. Wegner’s CH22, C23 and C25 chairs and the small contemporary furry chair Petra by Viggo Boesen from &tradition.

Dinesen Oak planks bring warmth and character to the guest rooms and are also featured in the hotel café, while the hotel shop and dining hall have herringbone floors in Dinesen Oak. This traditional timber species is the essence of quality and brings a calm, uniform expression to the hotel interior.

The boutique hotel has become a local meeting place for the town, and when the hotel’s backyard was completed in the summer of 2021, it soon became a favourite spot for hotel guests and Ålesund locals alike. Today, the hotel is run by architect Andre Klevberget, who in addition to spearheading the extensive renovation is also the hotel manager.
