Islington Townhouse

On the border of London’s pulsing city centre, in a neighbourhood of yellow brick buildings in Islington, this adorable townhouse went through a massive transformation by Maxwell & Company Architects and Designers Ltd. Leaving only the four walls prior to commencing the renovation, the architects modernised this residence with a keen eye for creating light and space using gentle materials, including Dinesen Douglas.

The dazzling result showcases a complete retrofit of an off-kilter Victorian townhouse with a modern interior that enhances the client’s art collection and creates a greater flow between the living spaces.

Topped with a poorly built mansard loft and resting on a damp basement, the townhouse was rescued from sinking. The Victorian exterior now belies its modern interior. The design centres on a bespoke staircase floating off the main structure, tying the bottom two floors together.

As the client wanted more space for his art collection, a closet wing extension was inserted to create a light tunnel, allowing pictures to be hung across the back wall. Showcasing these works required a subtle palette of materials, marrying concrete and tadelakt with Dinesen Douglas wooden floorings and stair treads.
