Christina Luk, the interior designer behind LUKSTUDIO, was commissioned to renovate an older flat in the Chinese city of Guangzhou. The concept for the transformation of the flat was guided by the notion that city-dwellers need a revitalising refuge in the urban chaos in order to relax and recharge.
The flat’s original design was dated, with an interior in shiny marble and dark wood that did not match the current owner and his family’s needs. The material and colour palettes were replaced and improved, and the home is now defined by natural light and smooth transitions between the rooms.
The central living spaces have been opened up to allow a free influx of light and establish a natural spatial flow. The bedroom and bathroom flow into one, separated only by glass walls. The effect is a feeling of greater spaciousness, a sensuous play of light and a sophisticated balance between material contrasts from Douglas wood to travertine stone, metal and porcelain.
In order to realise the concept of a refuge Christina Luk used natural materials. The solid Dinesen Douglas planks matched the owner’s vision of luxury due to its distinctive grain and the scent of pastoral idyll. To the owner and his family, the extensive integration of wood in the home brings a sense of living closer to nature.
In addition to lining the walls, floors and ceilings, Dinesen Douglas planks were used for bespoke shelves, built-in seating, a dining table and a bed frame. As Luk describes it, the presence of wood in every room brings a feeling of being on holiday in one’s own home.
