CUBE Objects by Per Schandorff
Per Schandorff’s CUBE Objects explore the space between sculpture, functional design, and architecture. Developed during a residency at Statens Værksteder for Kunst (Danish National Workshops for Art) from January to February 2025, each object is crafted from Douglas offcut planks donated by Dinesen, transforming leftover material into structured, expressive forms.
Schandorff’s five CUBES: #1, #2, #3, #4, and #5 are artistic explorations rooted in craftsmanship and material awareness. Each 51 x 51 x 51 cm form consists of 16 sub-cubes, subtracted from a mathematically perfect 3x3x3 grid. Eleven sub-cubes are intentionally removed, leaving behind a visual interpretation of a complete form. Each object stands unique, balancing fragmentation and unity—a tension that invites both reflection and play.
Though seemingly algorithmic, each CUBE is shaped by hand. Mitred joints and visible grain patterns reveal the natural character of the wood, allowing each CUBE to carry its own unique material story.
“Using off-cut waste material is a key part of the concept’s sustainability and contributes to fully utilising Dinesen’s wood resources. During the processing of the wood into cubes, I intended to highlight the wood’s grain patterns in varying tactile textures, creating both a visual and physical experience of “the tales of the tree,” allowing the CUBE-object to attain a unique expression defined by the wood itself.”

Simple yet complex, the CUBE Objects blur boundaries: between sculpture, furniture, and form study, where simplicity meets complexity and digital logic meets handcrafted tactility. As a method, they open up endless variations—in material, form, and scale—while celebrating sustainable design and storytelling through wood.
