Candy Loft

On the second floor of a hard loft conversion on a busy street in Toronto, StudioAC has designed an intimate apartment. The Candy Loft uses carefully designed material surfaces and formal gestures to create a warm, calm feeling in the home.

In order to emphasize transitions in the loft, from entry to living and from public to private, StudioAC designed intimate arched hallways that create visual buffers between the different spaces.

‘Allowing the solid wood planks to expand and contract throughout the year emphasizes the living nature of the materials we surround ourselves with. The use of Dinesen in this project lets the client document their use of the home through the patination of natural materials over time.”

Solid Douglas wooden planks in a floor flanked by warm LED lights add to the shift in atmosphere as the floor transitions from cool concrete to soft natural materials. The upward glow of the lighting highlights the curve overhead as one moves through the arched spaces.

StudioAC also used Douglas planks to clad the kitchen island, which is centred between the arched transitions.

Despite its location in the heart of downtown Toronto, the loft radiates a sense of intimacy reflected by natural materials that make it feel like an escape from city life.
