Park Avenue Penthouse

High above Park Avenue South, this 6,000 square-foot penthouse apartment on the top floor of a new residential block was designed by Søren Rose Studio for a Swiss-American couple who use it as their base when they visit New York.

The breath-taking project is the marriage between traditional Scandinavian design and both industrial and contemporary New York.

Immediately inside, the hallway is dominated by a book-matched Verdi Alpi marble wall that rises through two storeys to the rooftop swimming pool. The stone for this element was sourced from the same marble quarry where Mies Van der Rohe got his marble for the legendary Pavilion in Barcelona.

The hallway leads to the expansive living-dining area on one side, with the study and master bedroom on the other. The entire apartment is flooded with light from ranks of windows, and the pale colour palette gives it a cool Scandinavian feel – which is probably not all that surprising given studio founder Søren Rose’s Danish origins.

All floors in the living areas are made of 45 cm wide Dinesen Oak floor planks. The solid planks are made to last for generations, and the choice of Dinesen thus harmonizes perfectly with Søren Rose Studio’s focus on durability a key aspect of its design approach. In the studio's work, the revelation of time in a given design is seen to be of key importance from a sustainability perspective as designs that patinate beautifully are appreciated longer. This emphasis on durability also naturally involves a high priority on quality craftmanship.
