Clausholm Castle

Set within a baroque estate in Eastern Jutland, an unusual story of time, place, and timber unfolds beneath your feet. Here, the Dinesen Douglas flooring supports the rooms above it and reflects the forest it came from, the traditions that shaped it, and the hands that installed it, decades apart.

Clausholm Castle near Hadsten is one of Denmark’s most distinguished Baroque estates, set within historic woodland dating back to the 12th century. For generations, the Berner family has owned and carefully restored the property, maintaining and refining its original Baroque character.

Inside, the Dinesen Douglas flooring reveals a memoir of the landscape, craftsmanship and architectural continuity. A story of origin. Installed in 1978 and again in 1995, it was made from Douglas fir grown in the castle’s own forest.

An inscription cut into the wood records its provenance: Skov Amaliegaard Forest

The planks themselves follow the natural form of the tree. Rather than being cut into uniform widths, the planks are conical, meaning each piece narrows from one end to the other as it reflects the taper of the trunk. As a result, every floor surface is composed of planks of varying widths, creating a subtle rhythm across the rooms that feels both organic and architectural. No two sequences are quite the same.

Another feature that distinguishes the installation is the fixing method. The planks are nailed directly to the subfloor. The visible evidence of this earlier method contributes to the floor’s character, revealing a practical craftsmanship typical of its time.

The two phases of installation mark a clear evolution. The Douglas planks laid in 1978 are comparatively shorter, giving those rooms a tighter, more segmented pattern. When further areas were completed in 1995, the planks were produced in substantially longer dimensions, allowing the grain to run with greater continuity through the interiors.

Together, these floors embody a direct connection among estate, forest, and architecture. A Douglas story that has matured in place over decades.
