Villa Holmen (Trine Marie Sand)

Villa Holmen from 1917 became a renovation journey for Trine Marie and Martin. Together with their two children, the couple moved from a home of a very different calibre and embarked on a new adventure. The family’s former home was a contemporary new build with clean lines, simple design solutions and calm consistency as its defining characteristics. By contrast, Villa Holmen offered new experiences in every room and had variation as its key theme.

See the result of Trine Marie and Martin’s visions in Villa Holmen, which features bold material combinations and an interesting colour scheme with rich contrasts.

Villa Holmen was completely refurbished in order to accommodate a family of four and their individual needs. Only the exterior and interior walls and the general floorplan were preserved, while a new design took shape within the framework of the building’s original layout.

Trine Marie’s unconventional design ideas have given the house a new character that is in harmony with the building’s intrinsic soul. In rethinking the interior, the couple placed special emphasis on the quality and combination of the selected materials, including oak and lava stone supplemented with tiles, design objects and load-bearing timber constructions.

The house is bright and has an inherent atmosphere of curiosity sparked by the materials’ unique expressions and the soft, neutral colour scheme. Dinesen HeartOak complements the cosy ambience and adds an element of history with its vibrant structure and natural cracks, which are fixed with butterfly joints. The Natural Oil finish leaves a golden tone that strikes a warm contrasting note to the muted colours on walls and ceilings

The spacious kitchen has a cathedral ceiling with charming exposed load-bearing wooden beams and skylights that allow daylight to flood the room. Martin loves cooking, and the kitchen has become one of the most pleasant and inviting rooms of the house. Wood also plays a central role in the bespoke kitchen by Garde Hvalsøe made in Dinesen HeartOak with butterfly joints in oak making an appearance here and there throughout the surface. In the combined kitchen and living space, the different materials complement each other and summarise the building’s new design: golden oak, patinated brass taps and fittings, dark lava stone floor, all of it bathed in light from every angle.
